Great honour for Gee How Tong Mrs. Arthur Lee on advisory board

It is indeed a great honor for Gee How Tong to have Mrs. Arhtur Lee ont he advisory board for its 75th. Diamond Jubilee celebration.

Mrs. Lee's maiden name is Chan, which originates from Taishan, Kwongtung Province, China. She studied in Hong Kong at True Light Girls College. Her grandfather Chin, was a pioneer gold-miner that arrived in the United States during the CHing Dynasty. After the gold rush era he stared his own business in San Francisco and was elected as president representing six business establishments. During that time there was injustice and racial resentment towards the Chinese. Mr. Chan stood up for his race and fought for equality among those issues, establishing Gee How Tong Association in the United States. Maintaining harmony externamlly and internally amongst the Chinese communities. Mr. Chan was also the forerunner who supported the revolution overturning the Ching Dynasty

Mr. & Mrs. Arthur Lee have served the Chinese communities graciously, promoting Chinese tradition, philosophy and culture. Hence it is only fair for Gee How Tong to express its gratitude for their contributions to the community and country.

名譽顧問陳錫堅

 為慶祝至孝堂成立75週年紀念﹐ 籌委會能禮聘陳錫堅為名譽顧問﹐ 深感高興。  陳錫堅原籍廣東臺山六村人﹐ 祖父陳宗仰先生在清朝時﹐ 以勞工紙來金山開金礦﹐ 後經營小本生意﹐ 當三藩市華人勞工移民迅速增加﹐ 陳宗仰先生經營之生意也愈大﹐ 後來成為三藩市一家大公司﹐ 名廣華英。

 當美國白人排華期間﹐ 清政府外交無能﹐ 陳宗長組成三藩市六大公司任主席﹐ 代表華人與政府交涉種族歧視及排華案﹐ 時美國三藩市中華會館尚未成立﹐ 新組成之六大公司被當地政府承認。  其權力相等於英殖民地得哈遜灣公司。

受迫害邑僑﹐ 多以族人三姓為最﹐ 故後來力促組建至孝堂﹐ 至孝篤親公所﹔ 一方面排解族中兄弟內部糾紛﹐ 團結族人。  美國經濟困難﹐ 族中兄弟互相幫助﹐ 而需設立一個會址﹐ 互通訊息﹐ 當孫中山先生發起革命時﹐ 族中兄弟積極響應﹐ 獻身救國﹐ 出錢出力。

 陳錫堅受教育於香港真光女校﹐ 史一間教會貴族學校﹐ 當時任教真光女校體育老師﹐ 是滿地可土生﹐ 族人胡正渠﹐ 良師出高徒﹐ 陳錫堅是香港一名疊球健將。

 陳錫堅丈夫李俊棠先生是滿地可第一代土生華人﹐ 與胡正渠﹐ 胡鳳雲同一時代﹐ 但他們秉承祖﹐ 父輩優良家庭教育﹐ 深深洞鑒中國儒家思想哲理﹐ 夫妻倆對社會之公益事業奉獻良多﹐ 從不計較個人名譽榮辱﹐ 像先輩僑民一樣﹐ 默默耕耘﹐ 特記短文﹐ 以茲記念。
